Math Accelerator
Fuzl's Math Accelerator program encourages students to build skill and confidence in math by working at their own pace and getting frequent help, guidance, and mentoring from experienced teachers. One can think of Fuzl as a very focused private library staffed with math tutors and mentors dedicated to helping students when and how they need it. The primary goal of the Math Accelerator program is to do well on grade level work by reducing math anxiety and increasing confidence. For those that want to improve more quickly, the Math Accelerator program can be supplemented with Math-a-thons. Finally, for those who want to do even more, such as learning well above grade level, we offer the Fuzl Gifted program.
How does it work?
Students simply bring whatever math they're currently learning, and get to work on it. If they don't have any school work they need help with, we'll get them going with one of our apps. Stuck on a problem? We’re there. Learning something new and need a quick intro lesson? No problem. Not sure about how best to prepare for a test? We’ve got a plan for that! Even when students aren't actively asking for help, we're constantly keeping an eye on their activity and approach so we can ensure they are using the best tools and techniques.
We challenge our students frequently to ensure that not only can they get to the correct answers, but they know why. Challenges may come directly from tutors, via our Fuzl Accelerator app, or other 3rd party apps and content. We also encourage peer tutoring, especially from students in our Fuzl Gifted program. Such tutoring benefits both students: the tutee may benefit from a new, peer perspective that is similar to their own and the tutor increases their depth of knowledge by understanding the challenges of their "student" and having to articulate answers.
In each 60 minute session, we aim to do 55 minutes of focused work. If the group has been well-behaved and focused, we take a 5 minute break to enjoy a game or two (current games include air hockey, ping pong, Foosball, Skee-ball, and "Pop-a-shot" basketball).
What grades are supported?
We currently support up to Algebra I (typically done in seventh or eighth grade), but please contact us if you are interested in other grades.
Scheduling
We typically schedule 1-hour sessions and try to create small groups of 3-5 students. If you don't have a group already, we can try to place you with an existing group or create a new one. Regardless of whether students come alone or with friends, they will always work and be challenged at their own individual level.
Hours
Fuzl's Math Accelerator has flexible availability but generally we schedule sessions Monday through Thursday from 2:45 to 7:30 PM.
Pricing
We hope to keep prices low by limiting administrative time coordinating schedules and handling payments. To that end, we bill monthly based on the approximate number of times each student wants to come per week.
Once session per week: $150/month
Twice per week: $275/month
Three times per week: $400/month
So, if you pick the “Once per week” option, just try to come about once a week on average. If you miss a week, feel free to come twice another week. The expectation is that missed classes will be made up but if you can't or would prefer it, you can just ask for a pro-rated refund instead.
Payments
We do payments with Square, a popular 3rd party payment processing provider. Square provides a "Card Dashboard" where you can change your card, stop payments, or remove your card, and of course you can just let us know any time and we can stop/remove your card as well. You'll get a pro-rated refund if you ever decide to stop in the middle of a billing cycle.
